Introductory Remarks By now you should be familiar with the basic vocabulary used in Program Evaluation as well as the basic array of structures available for doing Program Evaluation. The next two chapters (Chapter 3 and 4) begin our exploration of the various approaches to Program Evaluation.
Chapter 3 provides the ‘back story’ to the difference conceptions we can hold of Program Evaluation. Different views of the world, different notions of ‘proof,’ different ideas of what is valuable and what has worth drive us to think about Program Evaluations in different ways.
Chapter 4 introduces what is in essence the default position on Program Evaluation – Objectives Oriented Approaches. It is intuitive to believe that we do something for a purpose and that if we attain that purpose then we are successful. This is the basis of the Objectives Oriented Approaches. Those of you who have studied Systems Theory will have some insight into this way of thinking.
Required Readings and Assignments The required reading for Session Three consists of Chapter 3 and Chapter 4 of the Fitzpatrick, Sanders and Worthen text.
The assignment for Session Three is to follow the instructions given in the Chapter/Readings Review assignment. The deadline date is May 15, 2009.
